Viewing the equipment used, the presentation of the fly, playing of fish, and tactical methods would be of enormous value. Experienced casters should be used with top quality photography. ![]() The demos should include presenting a variety of weighted and unweighted "flies" to stream-side fish. Demos made of various tapers using graphite and fiberglass fly rods from varied manufacturers could help many less experienced stream fishers to better choose an outfit for their waters. What I'd like to see is demonstration casting presentations comparing 5 to 7-foot fly rods of line weights 0 - 4. They show up unprepared for turning over submerged rocks, seining for food forms below and above the water to see what trout feed on, dressing camouflaged much like a deer hunter, and avoiding rod and face flash are important. They are obviously being led to using inappropriate equipment. I see fishers trying to use 8 - 9 foot fly rods who become extremely frustrated on small streams with all of the obstacles mentioned above. Knowing the hatches and how to determine what various pods of fish are feeding on is paramount to success. I find that adapting to this difficult environment requires fly rods that are in the 5.5' - 6' range where I can cast 1, 2, and 3 wt fly lines using 6X - 8X tippet material, breathable waders so I can kneel in the water, and a collection of dries, wets, micro-jigs with nymph and streamer patterns tied on them, tiny bead flies, terrestrials, crustacean flies, and wet flies. With canopies of foliage, tall grasses and weeds, willows, crystal waters and wind, the fly presentations required can be exceedingly challenging. 100% of our funding comes from your gear purchases, so if this blog post helps you on your next fly fishing adventure, please support us by buying your gear from us.Īs a trout fisher with decades of experience, I have learned that the spring-fed limestone trout waters of SE Minnesota, NE Iowa, and SW Wisconsin often require specialty fly rods and light lines. Native fish take the angler on a journey that’s as much about the landscape and the adventure as it is about the fish. Small stream fishing is, in some ways, a rejection of contemporary fly fishing’s spiral toward fast action rods, distance casting, and big water. While Southwest Montana is aptly referred to as ‘the fly fishing capital of the world’, you don’t have to be close to a well-known national park to charge into the woods and find a small brook and native fish. Your hair should be standing up if you’re an adventurer who calls a fly rod your partner in crime.įor me, spending two summers exploring Yellowstone National Park opened my eyes to the value of small stream fishing, a value that I’ve since carried back with me to the often overlooked small streams of Maine. ![]() Wild Brook Trout in the Northeast, native Cutthroat out West, blue lining, ditch poking, backpacking - can you find the common thread?
